Homemade Apple Sauce
Nicole Jimenez
Applesauce is a classic. It was my son's favorite snack through his toddler phase and still will enjoy as a snack from time to time. And when you have amazing local apples to work with it, it's even BETTER!!! This week, I made apple sauce with our Gala Apples from Ferrari Farms. It was SO delicious. Kid Approved.
Use it as an apple sauce or use it as a substitute in many baking recipes for oil, butter or eggs. Maybe just use less sugar if that is the intent, so your recipes don't end up super sweet!
INGREDIENTS:
10-12 Apples (cored, peeled, chopped)
1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 cup Brown Sugar, to start
Cinnamon, to taste
Salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS:
The hardest part of this recipe is the prep. Wash and clean your apples. I usually clean my fruits with a baking soda/water wash. Then, core and peel them all. Chop them up and put them straight into the pot or dutch baby.
Throw the rest of your ingredients into a pot or dutch baby. Cook down on medium-low heat, stirring regularly, for about 20-25 minutes. The apples will soften, the cider vinegar will lose its tart smell and mellow out.
Blend with a hand mixer or blender. Taste and season accordingly. I realize the instructions are so vague but it's really just that simple. I used 3-4 shakes of cinnamon initially and added a few more after I blended. Same for the salt & sugar.
I hope you give this recipe a try and let me know how it works out for you!
